ENVIRONMENTAL - What are Lone Star College–CyFair's Environmental Intiatives?

Purpose:  To establish and maintain a nature preservation area of indigenous species of animal and plant life on the Lone Star College–CyFair’s Barker Cypress location.  To recommend an annual plan of environmental projects to be developed and implemented. To research funding opportunities, when possible, for collaborative group projects. Included for this year are the following outcomes:

 

Katy Prairie Restoration Committee

Purpose:

  • Identify appropriate areas for signage designation for campus environmental projects.
  •  Investigate and recommend type of signage for installation.
  •  Develop a budget for required materials and solicit funds from various resources to secure signage.
  •  Plan installation with guidance from architect and campus facilities personnel.
  •  Identify and recommend appropriate area for establishing a campus nature trail.
  •  Develop a plan for creating the trail, including renting, borrowing or purchasing appropriate equipment and securing volunteers to assist in creating the trail.
  •  Develop a budget for required materials and request funding from student activities or operational budget as appropriate. 
  •  Design and create the trial.
  • Monitor and maintain the trail. 
  •  Identify trees for donation to the campus
  • Work with donor to remove trees and transport to Lone Star College–CyFair.
  •  Identify areas for replanting trees.
  • Develop plan for replanting trees including rental of appropriate equipment and securing volunteers to assist in replanting.
  • Develop a budget for required materials and solicit funds from various resources to secure trees.
  •  Plant the trees and label with appropriate signage.

Community Garden

Purpose:

·        Identify and recommend appropriate area for planting the garden.

·        Investigate and recommend types of plantings.

·        Develop a budget for required materials and request funding from student activities or operational budget as appropriate. 

·        Develop rules for use of garden by the college and community, including membership, hours of operation, and use and distribution of produce from the garden.

·        Plant and maintain the garden.

·        Annually review plans and procedures for the garden.  

Purple Martin Gourd Houses

Purpose:

·        Identify and recommend appropriate area for installing Purple Martin houses and signage to identify them.

·        Investigate and recommend vendor for purchase of Purple Martin houses.

·        Develop a budget for required materials and request funding from student activities or operational budget as appropriate. 

·        Partner with outside groups to install and monitor Purple Martin Houses 

Bat House Project

Purpose:

·        Identify and recommend appropriate areas for installing the bat houses and the signage to identify them.

·        Investigate and recommend vendor for purchase of the bat houses.

·        Develop a budget for required materials and request funding from student activities or operational budget as appropriate.

·        Install, monitor, and maintain bat houses.

·        Build fence around bat houses, to keep people away from bats.

·        Butterfly Garden Committee

·        Identify and recommend appropriate areas on campus for establishing butterfly gardens

·        Develop plan for creating butterfly gardens on campus

·        Develop a budget for required materials and request funding from student activities or operational budget as appropriate.

·        Select flora appropriate to attract butterflies and to the Katy Prairie

·        Plant and maintain butterfly gardens on campus

·        Monitor and maintain garden.
